When World Linen founder Milton Jupiter started working in textiles in 1964, the textile industry’s gross sales were larger than the entire banking industry. Milton was only 18 when he got his first job as a sample boy for the largest printer of textiles in the world: M Lowenstein & Sons in New York City. After four years paying his dues (and singing the sample boy blues), he was transferred to the sales department as a Junior Sales Trainee, where he proceeded to sell $3 million worth of fabric in his first six months. The rest, as they say, is history. From there, Milton went on to work as a Junior Sales Manager for Concord Fabric, a position that taught him a lot, and that ultimately led him to Southern California.
During his early years in Los Angeles, Milton was offered a number of lines, selling CaroLace, Martin Velvet, Guildford Mills, West Point Pepperell, Zendman, and others. He spent over a decade working solely as an independent representative, during which time he learned both the textile industry and the retail world inside and out. When it comes to textiles, he prides himself on being one of the most knowledgeable people in the United States.
Milton first encountered linen by chance when he became acquainted with a framing distributor that was selling the fabric as a mat board accent for artwork and photographs. He immediately teamed up with the company, turning the sidelined linen they kept in the basement into a major seller, and creating Euro Linens West in the process.
When the Cold War ended and business opportunities with the Eastern Bloc opened up, Milton urged his partners at Euro Linens West to explore the possibilities, but they ultimately decided not to expand.
Ever the entrepreneur, Milton left Euro Linens West and opened World Linen & Textile Company in 1994. Over the years, Milton has personally overseen all aspects of World Linen’s growth, and is proud to be celebrating the 15th anniversary of the company this year. Family-owned and locally operated since the beginning, World Linen offers boutique style service at very reasonable prices, and World Linen fabrics can be found in the finest homes and hotels around the world.
